Letter from the President

By Tanya Smith:

I would like to thank Mr. Stephen Griffin once again for his loyal support. He was kind enough to sponsor my trip to Las Vegas in May when I received a special invitation to the announcement of Siegfried and Roy partnering with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Exxon Corp. and the "Save The Tiger" Fund. Siegfried & Roy are to be the voice for the "Save the Tiger" Fund! I want to also thank our friends and supporters in Las Vegas, Terry and Annie, for my accommodations and their great company.

I was one of only about 40 people who attended the luncheon at the Mirage. I arrived at 11:15 and did not get back to my room until 5:30 PM. Siegfried & Roy’s staff made me feel very special and I was able to meet and share information with scientist, zoo veterinarians and other people commitment to doing all they can to "Save the Tiger"! Most of the other attendees knew of our work at Turpentine Creek and were impressed with our commitment to saving tigers here at home in America. How impressed, only time will tell.

The National Fish & Wildlife Foundation & "Save The Tiger" Funds, on the other hand, are very clear about their commitment being to saving Wild Tigers and the importance of educating the public about tigers in the wild. What they don’t wish to address is the importance of our captive Tiger population. The simple truth is that more people will have to learn to love and respect the tiger, both domestic and wild, for them to survive. Only by education will enough people care if these magnificent creatures are saved. It must be realized that the tiger is considered an umbrella species, and by saving the tiger we are actually helping to preserve an ecosystem. I believe that captive bred tigers play an important role in saving the species by inspiring public interest so people care if tigers become extinct or not.

I encourage anyone who has never seen the beautiful white tigers and white lions to go and visit the Secret Gardens. I did and I got to meet Siegfried and Roy and attended their show as their guest. It was an awe-inspiring opportunity!

I know with your help, that we can provide the animals at Turpentine Creek with similar natural enclosures so our tigers and other animals here can live their lives out in dignity and natural comfort. So want you PLEASE SUPPORT OUR FENCE-A-THON!

Until next time Tanya Smith
